2015 @ The Movies Take 128 "Cartel Land" This documentary explores anti-cartel vigilantism on both side of the US & Mexican border. Besides the chaotic guerrilla atmosphere that transpires, the most striking element of this piece is the contrast between the shape of vigilantism in each country. The Mexican group led by "El Doctor" is out in the open and runs like a political organization with public meetings and debates. The goal here seems social change through unsanctioned armed intervention. It is a mass movement when its US counterpart is more akin to an underground cell with a very individualistic outlook. The motivations of the lead US camouflaged activist are rooted in his personal history that he doesn't hesitate to share. Not to belittle the unprecedented access that documentarian Matthew Heineman provides us here, I wish the contrast had been explored more and approached as a dialogue rather than a juxtaposition. It is still a fascinating companion to its fictional counterpart "Sicario." Experienced Moxie Cinema as part of the True/False @ the Moxie Series on October 26 in auditorium 2.

And now la milice:
