2016 @ The Movies Take 47 "Demolition" With its intriguing premise and its top-shelf cast, expectations were high for this new film from Québécois director Jean-Marc Vallée. To be fair the film delivers, but ultimately delivers a bit too much. There is a lot of smart directing at play, but every shot, every line is orchestrated as a metaphor of the protagonists mental issues. The overload ends up suffocating the characters that don't have enough space to exist and truly connect with the audience. It seems that Jean-Marc Vallée did not know how to end his story. As a result, he started layering the second half of the film with extra plot lines (abusive boyfriend, destructive teen, ill-conceived trust funds, carrousel restoration) that rehash themes already established earlier instead of really delving into the topic. Vallée had hit a high note with "Dallas Buyers Club" and disappointed with the unimaginative "Wild Movie." "Demolition" falls in between with a very worthy first half and a second half that should have been torn down before coming out of the ground. Experienced at the Moxie Cinema on April 20 in theater 1 with Susie Gyllenhaal & Kurtis Wreckingball.
2016 se paie une toile 47ème "Démolition" (Sortie française le 16 Avril 2016) Avec une idée de départ intrigante et une distribution de premier choix, on attendait pas mal du nouveau film du Québécois Jean Marc Vallée. Il est vrai que le film en donne à voir, mais au final il en donne un peu trop. Les astuces de mise en scène sont légion, mais chaque plan, chaque réplique est joué comme une métaphore des problèmes mentaux du protagoniste. Ce trop-plein finit par étouffer les personnages qui n'ont plus de place pour exister et laisser le spectateur sur la touche. Il semble que Jean-Marc Vallée ne savait pas comment finir son histoire. A la place, il embourbe la deuxième moitié du film dans des intrigues secondaires (un amant violent, un ado destructeur, une bourse d'étude mal attribuée, une restauration de manège) qui rabâchent des thèmes déjà introduits au lieu de vraiment traiter le sujet. Vallée avait taper fort avec "Dallas Buyers Club" et déçu avec le fort banal "Wild." "Démolition" tombe entre les deux avec un première partie bien ficelé et une deuxième partie qui aurait aurait dû être rasée avant construction. Vu au Moxie Cinema le 20 avril dans la salle 1 avec Susie Gyllenhaal and Kurtis Wreckingball.
