2016 @ The Movies Take 68 "Love & Friendship"
Dear Friends & Lovers,
I am bewildered in my endeavours to form some rational conjecture of what Mr. Whit Stillman can have put forth on the silver screen to occasion so extraordinary a change in my sentiments. I was by no means prepared for such an event, nor can I now fathom the prowess of its unbridled jocularity. It is true that the Moxie appeared so exactly the place for it in every respect, as well from the elegant and impeccable style of its curating, as from my particular attachment to theater One, I was, nevertheless, very far from expecting so rollicking a spectacle. I have not detected the smallest impropriety in this filmic rendition –nothing of vanity, of pretension, of levity; and it is altogether so attractive that I should not wonder at you being delighted with it.
The Moxie Cinema, June 10 2016 at precisely half past five in the afternoon in the presence of Lady Susie. And once more June 18 of the same year, but at 7 o'clock in the evening in the presence of Doña Tatiana.
Yours truly,
Pascal
PS: Forgive me for this shameful missive partially pillaged from letters 3, 8 & 35 of Jane Austen's epistolary novella "Lady Susan" written in 1794 and adapted for the screen in 2016 by Whit Stillman.

2016 @ The Movies Take 67 Cemetery of Splendor (Rak ti Khon Kaen)

2016 @ The Movies Take 67 "Cemetery of Splendour" (Rak ti Khon Kaen) Ever since Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul received accolades at the Cannes Film Festival, his name is constantly dropped by every arrogant pompous French film critics (Like, there is any other kind). I have to confess that what they have to say about Apichatpong Weerasethakul's cinema sparked my curiosity almost as much as the fun spectacle of French snob cinephiles correcting each other's pronunciation of "Apichatpong Weerasethakul." At some point, the mere ability to perfectly enunciate the otherworldly patronymic "Apichatpong Weerasethakul" became imbued with near magical properties guaranteeing a review worthy of attention and praise. Consequently, I eagerly seized the first opportunity I encountered to experience a film by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. It is now with great keenness that I embark on a discussion of Apichatpong Weerasethakul's ninth feature before the said review ends up sounding like a Monty Python skit. "Cemetery of Splendour" is structured in a succession of long takes with a single still camera. Each take shows very mundane scenes where very little happens: power shovel digging a hole, young man relieving himself in a bush (#2), kids playing in the dirt, hospital patients sleeping. However, the few scenes of dialogues that briefly interrupt the contemplation introduce layers of meaning that slowly bring the viewer to reconsider the apparent mundanity to each long take. Although every scene seems anchored in tangible reality, Apichatpong Weerasethakul manages to imply a sense of magical realism where ancient beliefs, memories and fantasy become intertwined. The film takes place in a single location - a make-shift hospital in an old school building - where memories exist in simultaneous layers. The camera is perfectly still throughout the two-hour feature with the exception of two slow tracking shots. These shots function as doors to other layers of reality and memory: the abandoned school and the imagined ancient palace that used to stand on the same spot. The film will challenge viewers expectation in terms rhythm and narrative, but is like a hidden treasure of meaning and beauty. "You simply have to open your eyes." Experienced at Moxie Cinema on June 6 in theater 1 with Tatiana Weerasethakulita.

2016 @ The Movies Take 66 The Lobster

2016 @ The Movies Take 66 "The Lobster" The outlandish premise of this Italian production posits the couple as the cornerstone of human achievement. Failure to find a partner results in a demotion to an animal species (freely selected). Ironically, whether they manage to form a couple or decide to join the illegal single people underground, all human characters seem doomed for a miserable existence of hollow role play. The only beings that have a relatively authentic life are the animals roaming around. The film works best in its first half when we are confined to the rehab facility for single people and its mirror image in the woods. By keeping the rest of society it feeds off-screen, the audience can liken it to our own. However, showing it in the last part of the film, weakens the initial bite of dark satirical humor. The film remains a unique experience not be dismissed. Experienced at Moxie Cinema on June 4 in theater 1 with Susie Nosebleed & KurtisLisping.

2016 @ The Movies Take 65 "Embrace of the Serpent" (El Abrazo de la Serpiente)This journey on the serpentine timeline of the Amazon river documents how western colonial expansion commodified the New World and its indigenous people. Some might say, what's new? For one, Colombian director Ciro Guerra adopts the perspective of a local shaman, Karamakate, at two different moments of his life - 30 some years apart. The beautiful tracking shots of the river banks reflected on the surface of the water create this uninterrupted link between 1909 and 1940. The two moments seem to exist simultaneously connected by the eternal flow of the great river. Furthermore, the gorgeous mostly black and white photography both reinforces the historical documentary aspect of the piece and its magical elements of visual poetry. Without ever being heavy handed or didactic, the film manages to show the devastating effects of the out-of-control harvesting of natural resources, the Catholic Church gone awry, and the enslavement of the native population. In a pivotal scene, Karamakate destroys a crop of a rare flower known for its psychotropic/magic virtues. To him, the act of cultivating the plant perverts the ritualistic journey that comes with its traditional consumption. This is truly the embryo of the "War on Drugs" where a world of instant gratification has become divorced from nature and obsessed with an artificial destination and not the journey of self-discovery. Rarely a political statement has been brought to the screen with such artistry. Colombia's first Oscar contender was well deserving of this honor. Experienced at Moxie Cinema in theater 2 on May 30 with Susie Koch-Grunberg, Kurtis Schultes & Tatiana Karamakate.

2016 @ The Movies Take 64 "A Bigger Splash" Luca Guadagnino is back with a Swinton-centric remake. His previous ode to Tilda, "Io sono l'amore" (I Am Love 2009) had the formal beauty of a his fellow countryman Paolo Sorrentino, but left me in a state of indecision somewhere between brilliance and grandiloquence. In spite of its all-star international cast (Tilda SwintonRalph FiennesDakota Johnson & Matthias Schoenaerts), A Bigger Splash chokes a bit on too much heavy-handed tropes: the lolitta complex, the voiceless pop star, the exuberant over-sexed egomaniac, the brooding jealous lover... not too mention the constant snake invasion that unsubtly underscores the "trouble in Paradise" syndrome. The backdrop of the migrant crisis that is hinted at interestingly enhances the futility of the psychological drama, but falls flat as we fail to really care for the lead characters. Stick with the original 1969 "La Piscine" (The Swimming Pool) with Alain Delon and Romy Schneider in their prime which is as dysfunctional but way sexier. Experienced at Moxie Cinema on May 28 in theater 2 with Susie Lamier et Kurtis De Smedt.

2016 @ The Movies Take 63 Nice Guys

2016 @ The Movies Take 63 "The Nice Guys" Hollywood market research has (sadly) found that the more plot or visual information is given away in a film trailer, the greater the potential for a box office success. Therefore, trailers are too often designed to exhaust the films they are supposed to promote by showing every single one-liner and jaw-dropping action sequence. The trailer for "The Nice Guys" just seemed to be following this trend leaving no stone unturned. But "you know who else was just following orders? Adolf Hitler." Indeed, this diverging buddy movie constantly plays with our expectations and packs a densely hilarious script that the trailer barely does justice to. The basic recipe of the genre is to pair up two opposite leads: the serious guy and the goofy dude. With his film, Shane Black, refuses to type-cast his duo and lets wit, humor and ridicule bounce from one to the other in an unpredictable manner. He actually, even rejects the notion of duo announced in the misleading title and drops a smart teenage girl in the mix "and stuff." Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling excel at both scripted buffoonery and physical comedy turning this seventies Hollywood caper into a fun-noir romp. Experienced at Regal College Station Stadium 14 on May 27 in auditorium 6 with Susie March & Kurtis Healy.

2016 @ The Movies Take 62 "Elle" (US release date: November 11 2016) When the intelligentsia of French art cinéma meets Dutch ironic B-movie master Paul Verhoeven, subtle existential woes are pushed to the brink of dark humor thanks to an invigorating directorial energy. The strange cocktail holds its promise due to Isabelle Huppert's impeccable restrained edginess. She embraces the physical and psychological demands of Verhoeven's vision with a disturbing appetite that puts a new twist on the rape and revenge genre. For all its mastery, the film loses unfortunately a bit of steam in its last chapter and would have benefitted from slightly shorter cut. It is still worth seeing for its brilliant interpretation and mise en scène - not for the faint of heart, though. Experienced at Katorza - Nantes on May 25 in theater 2 with Marité & Roger Hamon.
