2014 @ The Movies Archives - June

Below is a monthly compilation of my 128 2014 film reviews originally published on Facebook:

June 1 2014 through June 28 2014:

2014 @ the movie take 56: "Jodorowsky's Dune” Some dreams never come true and here lies their power. A great hommage to Jodo’s exuberant appetite to take over the cosmos. Make sure to (Re-)read the Incal graphic novel series after watching this great doc.

2014 @ the movies take 57: "Fed Up” Your new worst enemy: a sugar-prone government. Your mission: eat less of it.

2014 @ the movies take 58: “Chef” It’s a bit like a live-action version of Ratatouille - do not tempt while hungry. Notes to Favreau: Sofia Vergara is not seasoned enough to be in this potage. Go light on the sappy honey goop. It does ruining an otherwise palatable dessert ending.

2014 @ the movies take 59: "The Edge of Tomorrow” This movie is a minor miracle. It had all the bad signs of a being a lame pseudo-sequel to the now forgotten “Oblivion”: Tom Cruise running around in a space suit looking upset at himself. Fortunately, it is about Tom Cruise constantly dying and getting better at it every time. What’s not to like? A solid sci-fi yarn that feels like a mega blockbuster production of Twilight Zone episode. "They say a dream takes only a second or so, and yet in that second a man can live a lifetime. He can suffer and die, and who's to say which is the greater reality: the one we know or the one in dreams, between heaven, the sky, the earth in the [Tom Cruise] Zone.” Rod Serling.

2014 @ the movies take 60: "Night Moves” This is a very understated slow-mo version of last year's “The East.” However, it avoids to usual trappings of the eco-terrorism thriller by removing the preaching and expository oil-soaked penguins. Instead, it focuses on the self-destructive paranoia of the perpetrators.

2014 @ the movies take 61: "The Rover” An intriguing contemplative  Mad Max helmed by a silently driven Guy Pearce. The atmosphere of decay and creepy despair is perfectly rendered. What? You haven’t bought a ticket already?

2014 @ the movies take 62: "How to train your dragon 2 (IMAX 3D)” They almost made it interesting - when you have Cate Blanchett voicing a recluse dragon-loving mom who abandoned her one-legged child, you really don’t need a one dimensional villain from the 90’s Disney vault (think steroid-enhanced neurotic Jafar with a hidden missing limb (it’s a theme)). Too bad…

2014 @ the movies take 63: "Jersey Boys” Aside from the central break up scene (Thanks for sharing) that feels like it was lifted from a superior film, the rest is a disjointed mess that feels like a Lifetime Scorsese TV-movie. Stick to Jazz, Mr. Eastwood.

2014 @ the movies take 64: "Obvious Child” A very politically incorrect fart-ladden pro-choice romance that makes “Bridesmaids” look like a timid fable. That’s what “chick flicks”  should be, in the noble sense of the term. Highly Recommended!

2014 @ the movies take 65: “The Neighbors” After seeing 10 movies at The Regal downtown, you get a free movie ticket. That ticket has an expiration date. That’s how you might end up catching “Neighbors” at 11pm one night. Even the previews were boring.
