2015 @ The Movies / se paie une toile Archives - July / Juillet

July 2 2015 through July 25 2015:
2 Juillet au 25 Juillet 2015:

2015 @ the Movies take 80: "Terminator Genisys" IMAX 3D. This film is like a class: it comes with prerequisites. Having a fresh memory of the original 1984 "The Terminator" (Thank you Moxie Cinema) and to some extent of the 1991 "Terminator 2 (T2)” will greatly enhance your viewing experience of the best moments of this latest installment. This chapter is clearly a Schwarzenegger showcase which is both the strength and shortcoming of the piece. The technical prowess and smart script twist that allow 3 ages of Arnold to collide are the best part of Genisys. However, the ultimate “villains” of the second half of the film are boring chatter-boxes that will make you long for T-1000’s wordless appearance. They end up undermining the set up of Arnold “Pops” - the aging T-800. The film unravels during its climax by avoiding the necessary [*Cough* Spoiler *Cough*] sacrifice that defined the franchise. The last 30 minutes hastily prepares the grounds for a sequel (or should I say a pre-post-requel) thanks to happily-dug plot holes and a lame stinger (post-credit scene) like we are watching a weak Marvel movie. The next installment should be entitled “Terminator Exegesys” because they have a lot of explaining to do… then time will have come to nail the coffin with “Terminator Obsolesys." Experienced at Springfield 11 IMAX on July 2 with Susie & Kurtis O'Brien.

And now on passe en terminal.

2015 @ the Movies take 81: "Me And Earl And The Dying Girl is a tragic teenage romance infused with extreme cinebuffery. It comments upon itself a bit heavily at times, but its unreliable narrator and the pitch-perfect cast save the day. It's also refreshing to see high schoolers with a Klaus Kinski / Werner Herzog obsession. Experienced at Wehrenberg Campbell 16 Cine in Auditorium 16 on July 4 with Susie Rachel & Kurtis Gaines.

2015 se paie une toile 81ème prise: "Me and real and the dying girl” (“This not a love story” oui, oui c’est le titre français! sortie prévue 23 Sept.

2015 @ the Movies take 82: "I'll See You in My Dreams (2015 film)Based on the trailer and the hideous poster, I was expecting, at best, a Hallmark version of "Nebraska (film)." From the first frame of the actual film, it becomes clear that the marketing team behind the trailer and the poster was shooting for the lowest denominator. Exit the horrible rainbow font and the twilight years sap - the piece maintains a palatable indy flavor and stays away from easy Hollywood tropes. However, the subtle performances of the lead cast are what makes it worth a gander. My only gripe is with the set design that feels impersonal and fake - in stark contrast with the characters who inhabit it. Experienced at Moxie Cinema in Theater 1 on July 5 with Terry Petersen.

2015 @ the Movies take 83: "Selfless" On paper, it was a risky move: having Ryan Reynolds embody the soul Ben Kingsley. It’s like serving camembert on a hamburger bun. Well, on screen it unsurprisingly becomes a disaster that will make you regret the worst parts of "The Green Lantern.” A vapid series of clichés of which I will spare you the exegesis. A more apt title would be “Less/Less." If it ever appears on your Netflix queue, delete it. Experienced  UA Horton Plaza 8 San diego, CA in Auditorium 4 on July 12.

Vu au UA Horton Plaza 8 San Diego, CA in Auditorium 4 on July 12.

2015 @ the Movies take 84: "When Marnie Was There" (思い出のマーニー "Omoide no Mānī") The latest Studio Ghibli offering might also be the swan song of the famed studio following the retirement of Hayao Miyazaki. This is really not fair to 2nd-time director Hiromasa Yonebayashi. This film should be seen as the new guard taking the helm and not pitted against masterworks like "The Wind Rises" or "The Tale of The Princess Kaguya." In fact, it seems to be more in a dialogue with Pixar’s latest "Inside Out." Like its American counterpart, it explores the psyche of a teenage girl, Anna Sasaki, through symbolic representation - a dreamscape in this case. When Ghibli has never been shy about featuring female leads, this piece breaks new grounds with LGBT themes that are rarely seen in teen-orientated animation. Even though filial love dominates the conclusion, Anna’ sexual identity through her relationship with ghostly Marnie is definitely questioned. The film cultivates this ambiguity in spite of the slightly over-talkative and explanatory ending. Formally, the film captures the elegance of Japanese urban and rural landscape beautifully. Experienced at Moxie Cinema in Theater 1 on July 15 with Susie Sasaki & Kurtis Toichi. Special shout out to Moxie honcho Mike Stevens for scheduling 3 screenings in original Japanese with English subs.

2015 @ the Movies take 85: "Love & Mercy My track record with biopics is very spotty, and my interest for the Beach Boys or Brian Wilson is marginal at best. Therefore, the deck was stacked against this movie-going experience, to say the least. Well, here is for a minor miracle. This portrait of a troubled creative mind is quite a success. The great idea was to have two actors portray Brian Wilson at two different periods of his life and to present them in a non-linear fashion. It takes the spotlight away from an individual actor Oscar-baiting the audience - a problem that plagues most biopics. It refocuses our attention on the struggles of the subject. The scope is also intimate and human, it never glorifies the genius at work. The film also documents very effectively the experimental years of studio production generating music no longer perfomable live. By this token, it is a perfect companion piece to the documentary "The Wrecking Crew” that came out earlier this year. Experienced at Moxie Cinema on July 17 in theater 1.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lioWzrpCtGQ

2015 @ the Movies take 86: "Heavy Metal - 1981 Movie" An attempt at “adult” animation that suffers from the uneven production of its different segments. However loosely connected each chapter is, it comes together around a shared effort to animate bouncing breasts. Now I remember why I found the piece so arresting as a 13-year-old viewer. Thank you Mondo Moxie for the reminder. The animated sci-fi feature that really embraced adulthood in a less hormonal teenage sense came out a year later: “Time Masters” (1982) designed by Moebius - one of the founding members of “Metal Hurlant” (“Heavy Metal”). Experienced ay Moxie Cinema July 18 in theater 2.

And now in français Lourd de Métal:

2015 @ the Movies take 87: "Ant-Man" (IMAX 3D) At its best this latest entry in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe recaptures the grand scale goofiness of Guardians of the Galaxy. However, its climax in a young girl’s bedroom doesn’t quite work. Even the psychedelic trip at the subatomic level falls a bit flat. It is still worth catching for the first three quarters and Michael Peña. He portrays a fast-lip-synching burglar who deserves his own film. The 3D is also pretty nifty for once. Experienced at Springfield 11 IMAX on July 21 with Susie Van Dyne & Kurtis Lang.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWdKf3MneyI
And now les fourmis de France:

2015 @ the Movies take 88: "Southpaw" A sweaty and bloody collection of boxing film tropes and clichés. Yes, we are not spared the reluctant older wise African-American boxing coach from the ghetto club saving the disgraced hero. The only added originality is the dilemma of being a pro-boxing parent when your pre-teen daughter can’t wait to to get a ring-side seat. The solution is to stick her in the locker room in front of a live feed of the fight supervised by a social worker. There was no need for a politically correct "Raging Bull." Experienced at Regal College Station Stadium 14 on July 24 in Auditorium 7 with Susie & Kurtis Hope.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D68vmev7KZc
And now sur le ring de France - Check out the French title "Belly rage" :):

2015 @ the Movies take 89: "Mr. Holmes" This elegant showcase for Ian McKellen portrays an aging Sherlock Holmes wrestling with his memory and the way his public persona has been reshaped into a mythical figure beyond his grasp. Holmes wanting to set the record straight with this last case seems like a doomed battle of words. No matter if he manages to commit this last investigation to paper, he has already lost control of the Holmes narrative. This clever meditation is worth seeing in spite of slightly melodramatic ending. Experienced Moxie Cinema on July 25 in theater 1 with Terry Miller Watson .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0G1lIBgk4PA
And now from la rue du boulanger:

Monthly Movie reviews originally published on Facebook - YEAR 2:
Critiques cinémas mensuelles d'abord publiées sur Facebook - 2ème ANNEE:
June 2 2015 through June 27 2015:

2 Juin au 27 Juin 2015:

2015 @ the Movies take 68 : "Disney's Tomorrowland" (IMAX) There is this awesome place that will give anyone hope for the future, but you can’t go there. We’ll just give you a trailer for it, and then you will have to ride a bathtub through time and spilt the Eiffel tower in two. By the way this “inspiring" vision of the future, is nothing but a pointy urban sprawl with excellent public transportation and incongruous swimming pools. Jules Verne would have probably found it quite plain. The script is a total mess. Aside from a few good lines delivered by Hugh Laurie in a dubious trenchcoat, the film is a collection of boring visual-effect-laden moments. Not even a charmless George Clooney can save this "Stale of Tomorrow." Experienced at Springfield 11 IMAX on June 2 with Kurtis Walker & Susie Newton.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWZ7O-RrATY
(Also check out the dubbed Gallic trailer below)

And now something en français pour demain:

2015 @ the Movies take 69 : "Merchants of Doubt (film)" This documentary explores how corporations and the media derail critical thinking away from facts and legitimate expertise to a fruitless debate sideshow in order to further an often irrational agenda, and drown any hope for change. It is a tall order for one film, and it mostly hits the mark. However, the focus is a bit parochial when the issues discussed have a global resonance. Still a worthy effort that should be supported. Experienced at Moxie Cinema on June 6 in theater 1.

A now something en Français douteux:

2015 @ the Movies take 70 : "Ex Machina(2nd viewing) Still impactful after a second viewing, the ballet of manipulations of the 3 leads was even more salient this time around. It also came to my attention that this is Alex Garland’s first feature film which is all the more impressive. Catch it (her) while you can at "a traffic intersection" near you. Re-experienced at Moxie Cinema on June 9 in theater 2 with Susie Ava & Kurtis Caleb.
For laughs the trailer with a horrible French dub: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOYPXYPHHZw
(Original English trailer with French sub below)

And now something intelligemment artificiel de France:

2015 @ the Movies take 71 : "Spy Movie" This Melissa McCarthy vehicle is just that: a Melissa McCarthy vehicle. Every scene is designed to give her space for a rapid-fire bawdy punchline. However creative she may be, the piece becomes repetitive and not that funny. The rest of the intrigue is an unimaginative spy spoof. The only redeeming quality is Jason Statham who serves as an unexpected funny foil for McCarthy. That does not save the film from getting a "thumb down" (which will take on a slightly different meaning if you catch the post-credit stinger - wait for it to become available on Netflix and forward to the end.) Experienced at Regal College Station Stadium 14 on June 13 in Auditorium 10.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAqxH0IAPQI

And now something d’une intelligence française:

Bande annonce VOSTF:

2015 @ the Movies take 73 : "To Be Takei" Documentaries have tendency to be hopeless and depressing which is not necessarily a bad thing, but here we have a "feel-good documentary.” In the noble sense of the term, it is steeped in positivity without shying away from the painful realities it describes. The way George Takei has managed to turn two great challenges in his life - the Japanese-American internment camp experience of his youth and having to be closeted for so many years - into positive social and political engagement is refreshing and commands respect. Catch it on Netflix! Experienced at Moxie Cinema on June 17 at in theater 2 with Susie Uhara & Kurtis Sulu.

Oh my!

2015 @ the Movies take 74 : "Inside Out" After a string of lackluster releases (Cars 2, Brave, Monsters University), PIXAR is back! This smart journey in the mind of Riley - a young teenager - embraces a level of complexity not often seen in US animation. The great move is to use a very ordinary real life plot (a family moves to a new home - remember My Neighbor Totoro?) to explore the extraordinary impact it has on Riley's inner psyche. Finally, pulling off a kids movie in which you will root for the character embodying “ Sadness” is quite a feat. Plus, we already know the best animated feature Oscar winner for 2016. Experienced at Regal College Station Stadium 14 on June 19 in Auditorium 14 with Susie joy & Kurtis Bing Bong.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRUAzGQ3nSY

And now something français ou vice-versa:

2015 @ the Movies take 75 : "DOPE" This is an unusual case of a misleading trailer in a good way. When form-wise I was expecting something more animated, the film remixes 90’s LA rap culture via 2015 geek-dom in a clever way. The portrayal of Inglewood youths creating their alternative to local gang culture is refreshing and shatters dangerous stereotypes. Without being preachy or dogmatic, the film shows how education, rather than material wealth is the way out of the ghetto. Throughout the piece, power relationships often revolve around a character's ability to understand and use language rather than who is holding the gun - the “slipper slope” running gag is a great commentary on that idea. The 90’s rap scene is a movie trend this year. However, here Rick Famuyiwa makes a bold statement about 2015 and stays away from dubious nostalgia. Catch it while it is still playing! Experienced at Regal College Station Stadium 14 on June 20 with Susie Diggy & KurtisMalcolm.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNlSBM8jVOY

And now de la dope française:

2015 @ the Movies take 76 : "John Carpenter's The Thing" (1982) This film holds a special place in my heart (sap!) as it was my first NC-13 Film in 1985 when I caught a re-release. Yes, NC-13 used to be a thing in France (No admittance under 13 mostly for horror and violence). My dad took me to the 11PM show for my 13th birthday on a week night! "The Thing" ushered a new era of movie-going for me that came with a sleepless night or 2. A journey that took me from "The Terminator" to “Aliens" to "Blue Velvet” (end of sap).
Thank you for this Proustian Madeleine Mondo Moxie - Experienced Moxie Cinema on June 20 in theater 2.

2015 @ the Movies take 77: "Jaws (1975) 40th Anniversary” It was my first time seeing the Spielberg classic on the big screen and in English. For all the noise around the Great White and the dismembered swimmers, what struck me the most is the actual small scale of the film. It is very play-like: 3 guys on a boat waiting for a shark - "Waiting for Godot" with more thrills. It is refreshing to see that the first hollywood blockbuster was this intimate. Experienced Regal College Station Stadium 14 at the on June 24 in Auditorium 7 with Susie Brody & Kurtis Hooper. "Dammit, Martin! This is compressed air!"

2015 @ the Movies take 78: "The WolfpackA perfect case against the tired rhetoric that vilifies a certain brand of movies that supposedly damage young minds beyond repair. Here cinema opened paths of creativity and self-expression for 6 brothers confined to a NYC apartment by their parents. This documentary will stay with you because it does not judge its subjects, nor does it try to answer every question behind this very unusual story. Finally, in an age of CGI overload, it is refreshing to see movie geeks fully committed to the papier-mâché aesthetic. Experienced at Moxie Cinema on June 27 in Theater 1 with Susie Lynch & Kurtis "Vishnu" Tarantino.

2015 @ the Movies take 79: "The Terminator (1984) In a scene from this James Cameron classic, time-traveler Kyle Reese warns Sarah Connor about the new T-800 model with these words: "The 600 series had rubber skin. We spotted them easy, but these are new. They look human... sweat, bad breath, everything.” That may have been true in 2029, but 2015 HD picture allows us to spot the rubber on that T-800 model real easy! (Check the clip below at 2min14s) Still when I was 12, it freaked me out. Experienced at Moxie Cinema on June 27 in Theater 2 with Susie Connor & Kurtis Reese.

And now on termine en français:

2015 $ The M vies T#ke 72

Movie review that should have been published on Facebook - YEAR 2

2015 $ The M vies T#ke 72 "Juras ic W0rlD" Please excuse the derelict state in which this review is presented to you. Our 72nd review that should have appeared on our May page comfortably tucked between the review of "Spy" and "To Be Takei" was inexplicably overlooked. Luckily, in August 1993 BC (Before Christ Pratt), I had the opportunity to spend a few weeks in Hartford, Wisconsin (USofA) on a cow farm. The purpose of my journey being primarily linguistic, my host family did not employ me as a farmhand. Instead, they would take me in the back on their pickup truck to the self-proclaimed "Family-owned neighborhood multiscreen budget movie theater showing 1st-run Hollywood films": Schubert's Hartford Theatre. Although the connection between the famed Austrian syphilitic composer and the name of the picture house was never explained, my host parents were good people eager to share the vast riches of their local culture. Hence, after schooling me in the art of North American bovine tending, they elected to take me to a screening of a spectacular livestock-centric documentary focusing on the revival of rare and extinct species entitled "Jurassic Park." The spectacle left "irreparable scars on the minds of foolish young consumers" (Zappa, 1977) like myself. Therefore, sparing no effort, I managed to extract a few strands of DNA of the perfectly preserved memory scar described above. Thanks to very advanced genetic engineering techniques that gave birth to the wonder of nature that are the Wisconsin dairy cows, I managed to recreate the lost film review of "Juras ic W0rlD" which turns out to be a third generation 3D variant of the 1993 Wisconsin original. The lost review went this way: "Mah!"  (An expression of disapproval or resignation.) not to be mistaken with "Moo!" (onomatopoeia: the characteristic sound made by a cow or bull.). Experienced at Regal College Station Stadium 14 in Auditorium 11 on June 16 with Susie & Kurtis Pratt.

And now voilà...

2015 @ The Movies Archives - May

Monthly Movie reviews originally published on Facebook - YEAR 2:
Critiques cinémas mensuelles d'abord publiées sur Facebook - 2ème ANNEE:
May 1 2015 through May 31 2015:

1er Mai au 31 Mai 2015:

Note: from the May 17 2015 entry, each review will also be available in French

2015 @ the Movies take 51 : "Avengers: Age of Ultron” (IMAX 3D) To me an Avengers movie is akin to a very large scale juggling act where the juggler has to keep a hammer, a tank, a butterfly, a floating city, and a plethora of tin cans and a vibramium shield in the air - and keep it witty. Did Joss Whedon pull it off again? Shit, yeah! “Language!” The balance of over-the-top “catch that city, it’s on fire” sequences and character moments is just perfect. The added bonus is a worthy adversary, Ultron, voiced by a superbJames Spader. *Spoiler* the introduction of The Vision is also a high mark in terms of design and rhythm shift. It’s a super-hero movie done right with a zucchini to boot. Experienced at Springfield 11 in theater 11 on May 1 with Susie Romanoff and Kurtis Banner.

2015 @ the Movies take 52 : "Clouds of Sils Maria Ever since her non-performance in Twilight, Kristen Stewart has had to prove herself as an actress. Maybe this film will put an end to the curse. She holds her own impeccably in front of Juliette Binoche, no less. The trailer bills the film as a trio, but it excels in its duet scenes with the aforementioned couple. The constant shift between rehearsed and true emotions is very powerful. According to  Olivier Assayas, true human bond and generational transmission seem to have become a mirage, and ultimately an absence - like the elusive snake of clouds cascading through the mountains of Sils Maria. It’s in English, but a French director is at the helm - don’t expect an ending with a bow on top. Experienced at Moxie Cinema in theater 1 on May 2.

2015 @ the Movies take 53 : "Force Majeure The day you find out the person you love his a selfish coward… Great premise for this Swedish import that works rather well in its first half documenting the disintegration of a vacationing couple. Disintegrating couples are the cornerstone of Swedish cinema after all. The way the Sartrian “bad faith” of the couple is constantly threatened by a third party is on target - think "No Exit” in a ski lodge. However, the film strays form its core premise towards the end and doesn’t quite stick the landing. Experienced at Moxie Cinema in theater 1 on May 3.

2015 @ the Movies take 54 : "Phoenix (2014 film)" On paper it seems we have here yet another World War 2 film: a camp survivor reuniting with her estranged love in the Berlin rubbles (Yawn...) However, this German import's focus on character and its sparse set design gives a much more universal post-any war feel. WW2 is more of pretext than anything. The core topic of the film is reconstruction of an identity after a violent trauma. While the initial premise is a bit contrived, the piece is saved by a wonderfully subtle performance by Nina Hoss (seen in A Most Wanted Man) and an oddly interesting use of diegetic music. Experienced at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Cinema 2 on May 8.

2015 @ the Movies take 55 : "Stripped (film)" This documentary explores the cultural significance of the newspaper comic strips in North America from Richard F. Outcault's Yellow Kid to Kate Beaton's web comics. The piece does a great job of presenting the evolution of the business model that supported the "Funny pages" for over a century through syndication. It is also your only chance to hear the voice a recluse comic-strip genius Bill Watterson(Calvin & Hobbes) who agreed to be interviewed. Scott McCloud astutely calls the alliance between newsprint and comic art a "shotgun wedding." This union has been unraveling in the last decade with the newspaper crisis. Luckily, new distribution models are emerging via the web that afford savvy cartoonists direct support from their readers. Catch it on Netflix! Experienced at TCAF - The Toronto Comic Arts Festival in Forest Hill Ballroom, Marriott Hotel on May 9.

2015 @ the Movies take 56 : "The Salt of the Earth" German director Wim Wenders invites us to explore the work of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. The documentary not only delves deeply into Salgado’s life, but is a magnificent showcase for his work of social photography. Salgado’s photography is both fascinatingly beautiful and heartbreaking. The second half of the film documents his work during the 1980’s famine in Sahel and the aftermath of the Rwanda genocide in the early 90’s. It’s a bit much to take in, but then the piece takes on a more hopeful turn. Even though the very last portion of the film comes as a relief, it also jarringly changes its focus towards ecology. It is almost as if Salgado had lost faith in humanity after documenting so much horror, and decided to focus on trees instead. Experienced at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Cinema 4 on May 9.

2015 @ the Movies take 57 : "Seth's Dominion" This documentary presents the work of premiere Canadian cartoonist Seth (Seth - Cartoonist). Seth's artistic vision is directly tied to places real or imagined. The documentary explores both through a visit of his workplace and animated sequences narrated by the author. Presenting comic art on film is always a challenge, and using animation is more than often a disastrous option. However, in this case, it very successfully conveys the spirit of Seth’s work. It is too bad that this film is not more widely distributed. It was a true privilege to experience it on the big screen in Seth’s presence. Experienced at The Royal Cinema - Toronto on May 10 as part of TCAF: The Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

2015 @ the Movies take 58 : "Welcome to Me" Much like in "Loveship, Hateship" (2013) this Kristen Wigg indy fare turns quirkiness into profound sadness. Once again, Wiig portrays a socially dysfunctional loner. The film aptly comments on manufactured fame, but stays away from the clichéd internet (un)success story gone viral. Wiig's character's obsession with Oprah leads her to build her fantasy on an actual TV set which is oddly vintage and refreshing. Well worth your time, but the "Bridesmaid" fans might get depressed. This has been a prepared written statement. Experienced at Moxie Cinema in theater 1 on May 12 with Susie Klieg.

2015 @ the Movies take 59 : "Mad Max: Fury Road" (3D) The Road Warrior reboot is a visual feast sprinkled with Alejandro Jodorowsky-level grotesque brilliance. The beginning is interestingly abstruse as most of the initial dialogues are not intelligible - heavy Australian accent on top of a made-up future cult dialect. However, it fails to deliver the cosmic payoff to be truly be "The Holy Mountain on Wheels." The plot is literally a u-turn which may point to the absurdity of the character's pursuit, but barely rivals an episode of the Wacky Races intrigue-wise. It's a pity the baroque imagery did not infuse the script writing more. Experienced at Regal College Station Stadium 14 in auditorium 14 on May 14 with Susie Furiosa & Mad Kurtis.

2015 @ the Movies take 60 : "En Équilibre" The title could translate as "A Balancing Act" - it portrays the struggle of horseback stuntman (Albert Dupontel) dealing with the aftermath of a film set accident that left him paraplegic. Rather than turning into a predictable physical therapy success story, the film focuses on the relationship of the lead character with his insurance rep (Cécile de France). When the film could easily dismount and sink into heavy melodrama, it is totally saved by the subtle performances of its two leads. Even the "be all you can be" philosophy of the lead character never becomes annoying propaganda. The film also knows when to end, and not in a radical French mid-sentence way, but a tad later, right before the dreaded Hollywood ending. Experienced at Gaumont Nantes in Salle 5 on May 17 with Marité et Roger Hamon. Sorry no official English title nor subbed trailer yet.

At my dad's request, starting with this review I will also include a French version each time, donc voilà la version française:

2015 @ the Movies take 61 : "Un Pigeon Perché sur une Branche Philosophait sur l’Existence” (Swedish with French subtitles). For clarity’ sake let me provide the original title: "En Duva Satt på en Gren och Funderade på Tillvaron” - if your Swedish is rusty, it says: "A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence.” My parents told me : “It is not a film we can recommend to anyone because it is pretty weird, but we think you should see it.” I am not one to ignore parental cinematographic intimations. The film is made up of a succession semi-related scenes shot with a single fixed camera. It plays like the unlikely offspring of Les DeschiensMonty Python and Igmar Bergman. Each vignette is brilliantly composed and drenched in a washed-out absurd tragic humor. There is no plot, nor intrigue yet it is oddly fascinating and thought-provoking. And yes there is a pigeon, but it is stuffed and on display in a sad museum. I am planning a repeat viewing, and highly recommend it to all adventurers of the silver screen. Experienced at KATORZA Nantes in Salle 5 on May 18 with a dead pigeon. Trailer with English sub:

And now something complètement français:

Bande Annonce VOSTF:

2015 @ the Movies take 62 : "Mad Max: Fury Road" (3D) - 2nd viewing with French subtitles! This time I could understand the opening dialogues thanks to the sub. It certainly added a bit more to the world building, but did not address the lightness of the plot. Still a fun ride that reestablishes the unique raw power of practical stunts. Go with your folks - especially if you had seen "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” together 30 years ago. Experienced at Gaumont Nantes in Salle 1 on May 20 with Roger Hamon. The trailer with French subs:

And now something furieusement français:

Bande annonce VOSTF: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GyXzJIPKdM

2015 @ the Movies take 63 : "La Lois du Marché” AKA “The Measure of a Man” is a film in the social realism tradition of "Two Days, One Night." The effects of unemployment and demotion are the center of this story. It is brought to life by a powerfully understated performance by Vincent Lindon. The rest of the cast is made up of non-actors which enhances the raw realism of the piece. Although the film doesn’t depict any graphic violence, it conveys a constant pressure that can be hard to bear. An uncomfortable reminder about the daily ordeal of many people just trying to get by in France or around the world. Expect a hopeless French ending. Experienced at KATORZA Nantes, France in salle 2 on May 21 with Anne Colombo, Roger & Marité Hamon. Trailer with English sub:

2015 @ the Movies take 64 : "La tête haute" AKA “Standing Tall” The perfect double-feature presentation to follow “La Lois du Marché” (see below). Director Emmanuelle Bercot explores the formative years of a young delinquent that a family court judge (Catherine Deneuve) tries to help. Although the filmmaking is less visceral and raw than “La Lois du Marché", the distress of the young Malony is very poignant. Much is owed to the primal performance of newcomer Rod Paradot. The glimmer of hope of at the end is a welcome, albeit short-lived, relief. Experienced at KATORZA Nantes, France in salle 3 on May 21 with Roger & Marité Hamon. Trailer with English sub:

2015 @ the Movies take 65 : "Slow West A very impressive first film by writer-director John Maclean. The depiction of 19th century Colorado is raw and brutal à la "Deadwood"or "The Homesman". However, the plot knows to digress to gives us glimpses of the diverse groups of people crisscrossing the state. My favorite scene is when the two protagonists run across two French-speaking Africans singers in the middle of nowhere. In that scene a slight connection is made, but in most cases the incommunicability dominates and spawns tragedy. The inability to process other gazes, languages and cultures is too often met with bullets. Sounds familiar? Yes, we are still working on that one. Worth catching on Netflix if you missed your chance to see it on the big screen. Experienced at Moxie Cinema the on May 27 in theater 2.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7u7X1ejGTI

And now something lentement français:

2015 @ the Movies take 66 : "Aloha Movie" The opening sequence of the trailer that does not seem related to the rest of the film is actually [Spoiler] the end of the movie! Well, not the exact end because 2 more endings are behind it. Do we have a focus problem? What is this film even about? A military romance? Hawaiian native pride? The return of the space race? All of the above, none of the above, I am very confused now. Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone do their best to navigate this mess of a script, but to no avail. I am usually all about writer-directors and their singular creative visions, but Cameron Crowe needs feedback on his draft. He recently apologized for casting Emma Stone as an Asian-American character in the film. I think he should just apologize for putting out such a weak film. To top it off, I just found out the official "French" title of this gem is "Welcome Back" (coming to France September 2), like "Aloha" is too hard to pronounce. Experienced Regal College Station Stadium 14 at on May 30 in Auditorium 3.

Check out the French dub of the trailer below :)

And now for something de bienvenu à nouveau:

2015 @ the Movies take 67 : "Far From The Madding Crowd" A classic Thomas Hardy love quadrangle that manages to convey the pastoral textures of Hardy's prose without sinking into picturesque corniness. Carey Mulligan is convincing as a farming proto-feminist. Casting Matthias Schoenaerts as the brooding shepherd was a great idea. However, his raw physicality could have been exploited further. Michael Sheen's performance has his upper-crust foil is the surprise hit of the picture. With limited screen time, he manages to convey a genuine sense of tragic heartbreak. Experienced at Moxie Cinemaon May 31 in Theater 1 with Terry Miller Barakat and Josh Wimborne.

And now something en français déchainé:
